Russell Labey: New BoyThe popular West End Show is coming to Cape Town in OctoberRussell Labey s adaption of William Sutcliffe’s Play "New Boy", the box-office record-breaking West End Show is coming to Cape Town. After being hugely celebrated during its recent season at London’s Trafalgar Studios, Russell Labey, now comes with this West End Hit to Cape Town’s NewSpace Theatre for a limited season from mid of October until mid of November 2009. Who is Russell Labey?Being widely known for his script editing on Gus Van Sant’s film Milk, which was nominated for an oscar in 2008 starring Sean Penn, Russell Labey has directed many successful runs of various shows he directed or co-directed in last decade. The acclaimed director who in the 1990s had presented many BBC and Channel Four television shows, made his first big shows as resident director for "Lets make an Opera" at Saddler’s Well in 1992. He has been the resident director on "Sunset Boulevard" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" at The London Palladium and also directed "Whistle Down the Wind" at various theatres throughout England and Scotland from 1995 until 1997 which won the TMA Award for the Best New Musical. Another fabulous two of the many other popular plays include "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat" which he co-directed on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and "Once Upon a War" on the Edinburgh International Festival. Upcoming projects include a stage adaptation of "My Fair Lady" at Cambridge. He will also directs and devises the annual London Whatsonstage Awards. And now he is coming to Cape Town to direct his adaptation of "New Boy" which will be performed at NewStage Theatre here in October.
About the Cape Town Play "New Boy"Russell Labey ’s adaptation of the play "New Boy" tells the story of Mark, a 17-year old adolescent who is anxious to finally get his sex life jump-started. When makes friends with the very attractive "new boy" Barry who begins classes at Mark's all boys school, the story evolves. Their relationship allows Mark the opportunity to experience his hormonal aspirations vicariously through Barry's exploits. Barry meanwhile, has no problem seducing members of the opposite sex. The two boys develop a very close bond that could ultimately change the course of their lives. The West End Show which was starring Nicholas Hoult will be recreated here in Cape Town with a local South African cast. The Cape Town show’s design is done by Stan Knight and Jane Gosnell will be responsible for the lightning design.
